The Flameback Cichlid, native to the shallow waters of Lake Victoria, is a stunning African cichlid renowned for its fiery red and orange coloration. This species is a fantastic addition to any cichlid aquarium, bringing vibrant colors and lively behavior. True to its name, the Flameback Cichlid boasts a dazzling orange-red dorsal area that fades into a yellow or golden body. Males typically exhibit more intense colors, especially during breeding, while females feature a subtler, silvery appearance.

Size and Lifespan

Flameback Cichlids grow to a size of 4 inches, with males being slightly larger and more vividly colored than females. With proper care, these hardy fish can live up to 6–8 years, providing long-term beauty and excitement in your aquarium.

Tank Size and Requirements

The minimum tank size we recommend for these guys are at least a 40 gallon. The bigger the better due to their super territorial and aggressive behaviors! Have sandy substrates, rocky formations, and plenty of hiding spaces to make them feel at home! Water temperatures should be between 75°F-82°F. Proper filtration and regular water changes are crucial for their well-being.

Tank Mates

Flameback Cichlids are semi-aggressive and territorial, particularly during breeding. They do well with other Lake Victoria species or similarly tempered African cichlids. Avoid housing them with overly aggressive species or fish that are much smaller, as conflicts may arise.

Diet

African cichlids are big eaters. They always look hungry when approaching the tank. Good quality cichlid pellets should form the staple part of your fish’s diet. Frozen food such as brine shrimp and mysis shrimp are great to feed once or twice a week. Avoid feeding bloodworms as they are difficult for African cichlids to digest. While flakes are a great option for a tropical fish community tank, African cichlids need something more substantial and pellets are ideal.
