African Cichlid: Chailosi

Chailosi Cichlids boasts a mesmerizing blend of colors and patterns that make it a true standout in the world of freshwater fish. Adult males are particularly breathtaking, with their vibrant yellow and blue hues adorning both their flanks and head. As an additional visual treat, these cichlids exhibit variable bar patterns on their flanks, making each individual unique.

Size and Lifespan

Chailosi Cichlids grow to a size of 6 inches, with males being slightly larger and more vividly colored than females. With proper care, these hardy fish can live up to 5–8 years, providing long-term beauty and excitement in your aquarium.

Tank Size and Requirements

The minimum tank size we recommend for these guys are at least a 55 gallon. The bigger the better due to their super territorial and aggressive behaviors! Have sandy substrates, rocky formations, and plenty of hiding spaces to make them feel at home! Water temperatures should be between 75°F-82°F. Proper filtration and regular water changes are crucial for their well-being.

Tank Mates

Chailosi Cichlids are aggressive and territorial, especially males. We recommend only keeping them with same tempered Mbuna species. We do NOT recommend keeping these guys with Peacocks and Haps!

Diet

African cichlids are big eaters. They always look hungry when approaching the tank. Good quality cichlid pellets should form the staple part of your fish’s diet. Frozen food such as brine shrimp and mysis shrimp are great to feed once or twice a week. Avoid feeding bloodworms as they are difficult for African cichlids to digest. While flakes are a great option for a tropical fish community tank, African cichlids need something more substantial and pellets are ideal.
