African Cichlid: Jacobfreibergi

African Cichlid: Jacobfreibergi

Aulonocara jacobfreibergi

The Jacobfreibergi Peacock Cichlid is a breathtaking freshwater fish native to Lake Malawi in Africa. It has bright oranges and reds strongly contrasted with bright blue markings on the face, tail, and fins.

Size and Lifespan

Jacobfreibergi Cichlids typically grow to 6 inches, with males showcasing more vibrant colors than females. With proper care, they can live for 6–8 years, providing years of beauty and activity in your aquarium.

Tank Size and Requirements

Like all haps and peacocks, they are more of a swimmer than rock dweller, so they need plenty of swimming space! The recommended tank size for Taiwan Reefs that we suggest is 75 gallons! Use sand as the substrate and include rocks or caves to create hiding spots. This setup mimics their natural habitat and helps reduce stress. Keep the water between 76°F and 82°F. Frequent water changes and strong filtration is strongly suggested for optimal health.

Tank Mates

Jacobfreibergi Peacock Cichlids are relatively peaceful compared to other African cichlids. They coexist well with other Peacock Cichlids and non-aggressive Haps. However, in typical African cichlid tanks, only one or two males may show bright colors.

Diet

African cichlids are big eaters. They always look hungry when approaching the tank. Good quality cichlid pellets should form the staple part of your fish’s diet. Frozen food such as brine shrimp and mysis shrimp are great to feed once or twice a week. Avoid feeding bloodworms as they are difficult for African cichlids to digest. While flakes are a great option for a tropical fish community tank, African cichlids need something more substantial and pellets are ideal.
