Molly fish are known for their lively and active behavior. They are highly social creatures and thrive in community tanks with other fish. However, it’s important to note that male molly fish can display aggressive tendencies, particularly during the breeding season. Ensuring a well-balanced and harmonious tank environment is crucial to prevent any conflicts among tank mates.
Size and Lifespan
Mollies grow to an average of 3 inches long unless you get a sailfin molly which can get up to 6 inches long! Mollies can live up to around 5 years (sometimes even longer!) if cared for properly.
Tank Size and Requirements
We recommend a tank that is 20 gallons for a trio of mollies. Offer plenty of swimming space and plants for cover. They prefer water temperatures between 75°F and 82°F. Mollies are generally peaceful and sociable fish that do well in community tanks, but their interactions with other fish can vary based on individual temperaments and environmental factors. We’ve had success keeping ours with cory catfish, danios, tetras, loaches, barbs, and other livebearers. Avoid putting larger mollies with smaller animals like cherry shrimp because they will most likely get eaten.
Diet
Mollies are omnivores that require a balanced diet to maintain their vibrant colors and health. Provide high-quality flakes or micro-pellets as their primary food, supplemented with live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. A nutrient-rich diet keeps their colors vivid and supports their energy levels.
