Cichlid: Black Convict

They are also sometimes called Convict Cichlids or Zebra Cichlids. Black Convict Cichlids are recognized by their grey to silver body with multiple black vertical bars. They can have a greenish tint on their fins. Females have orange scales on their lower body and dorsal fins.

Size and Lifespan

Black Convicts can grow up to 5 inches. They can live for 8-10 years, making them a long-term commitment and a standout addition to large aquariums.

Tank Size and Requirements

The minimum tank size is 30 gallons is needed for a single Black Convict Cichlid, with larger tanks required for additional fish or community setups. If you do end up with a pair, be prepared for babies! They thrive in water temperatures between 75°F-80°F. Provide a sandy or gravel substrate, along with sturdy rocks, caves, and driftwood for territories and hiding spots. Strong filtration and regular water changes are essential to manage their bioload and maintain water quality. If you do want to house them with other fish, they have to grow to be in similar size and temperament.

Diet

Black Convict cichlids are omnivorous fish, they thrive on a mix of foods. High-quality pellets or flakes designed for tropical fish can serve as a staple diet, providing essential nutrients. However it is highly recommended to supplement their diet with live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp.
